Tone is built in layers — the whole image gets a first set of parallel strokes, darker regions get a second set crossing it, darker still a third — so highlights stay as open paper and the deepest shadows fill with a dense mesh, the way an engraver or a biro builds shadow. Each layer has its own angle and darkness threshold, with an optional hand wobble so strokes read drawn rather than plotted. The source is reduced to a small luma grid so it stays fast. Controls: line spacing, tone layers, base angle and cross angle, line width, hand wobble; contrast, highlight clip and invert; ink, paper. With no source it hatches a synthesized sphere so it still previews.
